Regional Champs

Well.... how to put into words such an exciting weekend !!! We loaded the bus at 8 AM and made our way south to Red Bud Motocross Park. It rained, snowed, and sleeted all the way there and continued pretty much all morning. It was COLD !!! We went from 80/90's to cold and rainy.. Only in Michigan, Right ?  Ok.... well here is the EXCITING part !!! Girls WON Regional's (first time in 25 years) and we are super excited that Jacob Deboer qualified for the State meet as an individual placing 14th.

So Next weekend we are off to state taking the Girls team and Jacob. So what does State look like for us this year? Well if we keep running like we have been we are expected to do very well at the State meet which is really exciting for the Team and the School.

As Coaches we couldn't be more excited. We are so Proud of the Team and the hard work that they have put in this season. They are an AMAZING group of students and we are so blessed to be able to share this with them.

If you have any pictures that you would like to send me to include in the end of season Slide show just email them too mj.schrotenboer@gmail.com

Greetings,

I seriously can not believe that we are this far along in the season already. The season is just flying by so fast. So far this season we have had most of our races in some pretty warm temperatures. So yesterdays 68/69 felt great. The athletes still got warm while running but they were not over heating. There were a lot of great times and a even a few more PR's Yesterday !!!!

Next week we look forward to some very specific training for the varsity and the upcoming regional meet and on Tuesday the JV will have a Last Chance PR meet.

Workout Nutrition

We get quite a few questions every season about Nutrition. We try address many of them as best we can. I came across this article and thought it was a good read, worth sharing. It pertains to all Athletes in general.

Dear HCXC runners

Dear HCXC runners, October, 2017

We are nearing the end of our season and it has been a good one. We started with a win at Orchard View for our girls - a first in our school history. Boys also started the year strong and over the season dropped minutes off their PR’s. Coaches have the amazing responsibility of leading you through a season of training (rigorous and sometimes not so) that will eventually bring you to your personal best (or peak) at just the right time. We also have the awesome privilege of walking along side you through those victories, defeats, injuries, bad days, heartache and laughter. This is a journey for sure. But we don’t want you to remember only the workouts, runs and races. We want you to remember the bus rides, waiting for your race, ice baths, Laketown, Peachwave, laughter, ice cloths a lot this year, talks on your runs, bonus 5, uniform malfunction…the ordinary, everyday.
Boys and Girls are both good teams this year. We push each other to be better by challenging each other. And we are good because we care.  Care about running and doing well and care about each other. We know you care because you have all shown up and worked hard for us this year and it reflects in your races and times. We are good because XC is more to you than running. It is doing our best for ourselves, our team and most important, for our God.
We are a team and together we will run confidently, putting any fears or negative thought we have to death and focusing only on the positive and giving our absolute everything. All of us will be at conference, but we hope you will come with us to Regionals and State even if you don’t run. You are part of this team and still have an important role to play in getting our team as far as it can go. Plus, we love your company.
Thank you for all your effort this year. We are blessed to be part of this wonderfully hilarious team.

Your coaches.

Blauw, DeKruyter, Melissa and Deb

Portage Invite

Greetings,

I hope that everyone had a fantastic weekend enjoying this warm weather that we have been having. Saturday at the Portage Invite we probably would have liked to have a little cooler temps for racing but it is what it is. Not much we can do about the weather. We raced well considering the temperatures again pushed their way into the upper 70's on Saturday and all our races were in the afternoon.

This week we are taking a few days for recovery. We are feeling a little beat up after having so many warm tiring meets. These easy days will help us recover and get ready for the last few races coming up.

Cougar Falcon Invitational

The Cougar Falcon Invitational is known for PR's(Personal Records) we look forward to this event because the course is fantastic and there is a lot of competition at the event. This year however with temperatures lingering around 90 degrees Athlete Health/Wellbeing was VERY high on our list of things to keep an eye on. We brought along lots of water and an ice bucket with rags so the runners could try to keep themselves cool before and after they ran.  A big bummer because of the heat meant that it was not going to be a day for PR's. It was a day to run hard(safely) the heat inevitably slowed us down. We are happy that EVERY one is doing well post race. Lots of water and recovery naps !!!

This week we are taking it easy on Monday b/c we still need some recovery time, and taking our workout to the beach on Tuesday for some water running to stay cool.

HC at Ridgepoint Vs Holland & Hamilton

So... this week it has been HOT outside we are getting our second summer right now. I hate to complain because I have been enjoying some extra time at the beach but 88 degrees and sunny is rough when running a 5K RACE !!! We are so proud of how they toughed it out last night at the meet. Every one ran the way they were supposed to and we are happy that we had no heat related issues on our team.

Prayers Requests:
For the Blauwkamp Family as they morn the loss of a Child and Grandson.
For Bradley Gerritsma on our team who has Mono, we hope that he feels better soon
For Continued health and NO injuries for the XC runners

Wednesday 9/7/2017
Girls @ 4:15
Boys @ 5:15
HC VS Byron Center
HC VS Zeeland East
@ Hamilton High School

What a Fantastic Evening for for Cross Country. Partly Cloud a light breeze and 60's for the temp.. Seriously that is just GREAT running weather. We are super Happy with Happy with how both the Girls and Boys teams performed yesterday. For 2017 the Girls run first. They did a great job and stuck to the plan of running in a solid pack. In the Boys event it was a GREAT evening for PR's (personal records) they are starting the season out strong and we cant wait to see how the rest of season goes.

Here we Go !!!!!

 I can't resist taking a picture of a rainbow,
even though they never turn out as what I hope they will
Did anyone get an good pictures of the Double Rainbow from Tuesday Evening?

I was curious just how much running I do during a Cross Country Meet.
I Logged 4.6 miles and I think am going to call this a Fartlek workout :) haha

Fartlek, which means "speed play" in Swedish, is a training method that blends continuous training with interval training. Fartlek runs are a very simple form of a long distance run. Fartlek training “is simply defined as periods of fast running intermixed with periods of slower running."

Running Through the Uncomfortable:
A lot of people ask me how I do it. Run as fast as I can for a certain amount of miles whether that be six miles, three miles, two miles or just a mile. Some think that no running hurts me at all and workouts and races come easily. The truth of the matter is that everything always tends to hurt while racing or getting through workout days. Sometimes I just really appreciate the easy days.
Some days I am ready to put my body through lots and lots of pain and work hard to get better, yet a shot at the doctor scares me more that workouts that could put my body in the ground, and yet some other days I have to convince myself to work hard and need motivation. In the long run (pun not intended ;) ), that everything that I do for a 5k race and for one or two seasons of the year is completely worth it. A verse that comes to mind when I feel like I’m about die, is Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” I write this down on my hand before every race so that I can remind myself that even though I am in a lot of discomfort, I do this to glorify God. I also write it on my hand so that other people know that I run for the glory of God and of myself.
Before each season, I come up with a lot of motivation of what I want to accomplish whether that be during the cross country season or the track season. Every workout and race that I do, I know that I will be closer to reaching those goals. Sometimes just getting through the workout and having those thoughts in the back of my mind gets me through the uncomfortable in running. I think of the fast times, the big meets and racing against national caliber athletes gets my heart racing and gives me the motivation and drive I need to become my best.

Running is a very competitive sport but it is also a sport where you get close to your competitors. I lover acing against some of the very best and becoming friends with them. It takes a little pressure of
my back knowing that I have some I know to run next to. We encourage, motivate and help each other up when we are having a bad race. It’s like having really good teammates from other schools. Sportsmanship also helps you run through the uncomfortable. Running is something I love to do but sometimes gets monotonous so having a little extra motivation here and there is good to keep me going through the uncomfortable and through the less motivating times. When all the hard work and running through the uncomfortable pays off, the relief you feel when you are done and getting your goals is the best feeling. I guess this is why I do it. I love to be competitive, work hard and seeing all of it pay off. Once one goal gets completed you start the whole cycle over again. Is is easy? No. Is it worth it? Heck yeah, I would do it all over again anytime just so I can see improvements in myself and praising God at the same time.
