Hopeful

I thought about the end of John Bunyan's book Pilgrims Progress when Christian and Hopeful arrive close enough to see the Celestial City.  The following below is an excerpt from the book as retold by Gary D. Schmidt.  (Thanks to Dawn for her help finding it for me.)

...The path ended abruptly in a deep and dark river that flowed swiftly.  Hopeful and Christian could see no bottom.  They looked up and down each bank.  They could see no bridge.  Across the river, two Shining Ones appeared, one sitting on a large, round stone marked with a broken seal, set before an open cave.  "Is there no way across?" Christian called out to them.  "There is no bridge," the Shining Ones answered.  "Is there no other way?"  "None for you.  You must go through the waters or you cannot come to the gates."  Christian and Hopeful walked down to the water that swirled against the banks.  "Is it deep?" Christian called to the Shining Ones.  They shrugged.  "You shall find it deep or shallow, depending on how firmly you believe in the Owner of this place."  Then the two Shining Ones vanished.

A look of determination filled Christian's face as he and Hopeful stepped into the waters.  At first he kept his eyes on the gates of the Celestial City, and the bottom of the river seemed firm.  His feet were hardly wet.  But then he looked down to the water, and suddenly he remembered Apollyon's charge that he had been disloyal to Emmanuel.  And he remembered all the times that he had left the path.  Then the river seemed to rise up against him in foaming waves, and he felt the bottom slip away.  Desperately he looked up to the City, but a mist had come up from the river and hid it from him.  "This is the River of Death," he cried, and then fell under the waters, into the darkness and horror.  Hopeful struggled to pull Christian's head above the water.  "I shall not see the land of the Celestial City," Christian sputtered.  "Do not despair!" cried Hopeful.

"I see the gates already, and the Shining Ones standing on the shore to receive us."  He pulled Christian through the waters.  "It is only for you that they wait," insisted Christian.  "You have been hopeful since I have known you."  "And you as well.  Be of good cheer.  Remember: 'When I pass through the waters, Thou art with me.'"  "Thou art with me," repeated Christian.  "Thou art with me."  And as he remembered the Owner's promise, the waters stilled, the river bottom came back under his feet, the mist cleared, and Christian saw the gates of the Celestial City again.  Together Christian and Hopeful waded across the rest of the river and reached the shore of the other side...

God is with you.  Cling to His Hope.

Broken

"Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
This I declare about the Lord:
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;
he is my God, and I trust him.
For he will rescue you from every trap
and protect you from deadly disease.
He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection."

"Pushing through the Uncomfortable”

Coach Deb Lenters

"Pushing through the Uncomfortable”
What does it mean when we say, “I’ve given my all, I’m spent, I’ve got nothing left to give”? It usually means we are near the end of our rope. Near. Not done. Not really the end. We think for a moment we’re done. But we’re not. Not really. Something deep down with in our soul, or maybe more within our phsychy, wakes up. But for a fleeting moment it says, “Wait a minute. I am not a quitter. I’m still alive. I can do this. I don’t know how, but I am not done before the end is actually here.”

I am more uncomfortable than I have ever been, but I am not done. I will tell my brain that it will continue to put one numb foot in front of the other, one strained hamstring, one tight calf in front of the other until this entire body is across the finish line. If I have to cry or hyperventilate, so be it. I’m not stopping. I don’t want to walk and will therefore do everything I can to slow jog, but I will get there – walk if I must. A DNF (did not finish) is only necessary when one is truly injured and unable to finish. DNF to me means “Do not Forget”. Do not forget how blessed you are. Do not forget how many people are cheering you on. Do not forget it is a blessing to be able to run. Do not forget that there is the God of the universe who has uniquely created you to be exactly who you are and that you are great SIMPLY because you are HIS.
I will be uncomfortable at times and it is then that I realize what it means to truly challenge myself and how fortunate I am to be able to “feel”. And I will understand the true exhilaration at the end knowing, “I did not give up”. Just like Christ did not nor ever will give up on me.
Push through. You are worth it.

decisions which carry
the least risk of failure...and by so doing
run races far below their real potential.

HC Vs. ZE, BC

 -> RESULTS

Wednesday OK-GREEN Conference Jamboree. Holland Christian vs. Zeeland East and Byron Center at Ridge point. The Ridge Point course is known for the "HILL" Everyone hates the Hill however we usually run pretty well at Ridge Point and have a few PR's. Which is what happened yesterday. The Girls Won both of these races beating Zeeland East and Byron Center. The Boys worked really hard and came home with some new PR's. Girls and Boys Teams both had great races.

Alright so the pictures didn't turn the best this week.
Tim really is running super fast that is why it looks so blurry :)

Not sure what was going on with all the band-aids
but the girls team seemed to have them all over there legs. haha

Dig Deeper

Blog Series on Running and Pushing to that NEXT Level !!! Stay tuned for more stories and experiences from Past and Present Cross Runners.

The first Two Stories come from my(Coach Melissa) Cousins Jodi and Tami, Holland Christian Cross Country and Calvin Cross Country :)

I began running when I was in 7th grade. I continued to run competitively in both cross country and track through my senior year of college. In high school I would have said running came naturally to me. I enjoyed it and thankfully I never suffered an injury. I had fun, got my picture in the paper sometimes, and there was little to no pressure to succeed. College however, was another story. I learned that there is so much more to running than having fun with teammates and winning a race. If competitive running is "easy", then something is missing. What about the part where God asks you to use your God-given talents to honor Him by doing your best? What about pushing yourself and maybe even feeling some pain in the process? My college teammates were tough. They puked after workouts. They needed IVs after the big races. Maybe it was borderline insanity, but maybe not. They knew something I was only beginning to learn. Each one knew that when his or her body was physically exhausted, when their muscles cramped and lungs were ready to explode, it was time for the brain to take over; mind over matter. God has given each of us so much strength, especially mental strength. Our bodies can do incredible things physically. When we really push ourselves, we can build muscle, increase endurance and improve our PRs, but our minds can take us to places our physical bodies alone can't take us to. I have been privileged to have worked with many incredible coaches and athletes. I learned that to truly do my best and reach unthinkable goals, I need to surpass my physical strength. We were taught “when the going gets tough it's time to dig deeper and focus on finish line.” I also learned that there is always someone faster and tougher to chase after. I reached my goals by following close behind, never letting her out of my reach and especially never out of my sight. No matter the discomfort or fatigue or desire to give in, my mind was made up from the start...To never let go of her at any cost. To sum this all up... when you reach the point of pain or "hit the wall", the three things I recommend: Dig deeper. Let your mental strength take over and focus. Find someone who's tough to stick with till the end.

Alright, how about a little marathon training experience... There's nothing quite like it (although I can't even imagine an ultra or ironman)! in races, we establish goal times for given distances and while the goal time is important, sometimes it's even achieving the distance that can be the goal. Either way, setting the right goal is important in order to push yourself harder and farther and come away feeling a great sense of accomplishment.
So for me, running 26.2 miles is always a big feat, and doing it to pace means training properly. Those long runs when you've added miles from the last long run and all you want to do is walk are nearly torture. Those hilly runs, those paced tempos, and the fueling that it takes feels like it takes all day sometimes and can start to feel pointless or not worthwhile, but when race day comes and you stick to your smart and well devised running plan (that those who have gone before you have helped you establish), it's easy in comparison.

There is great joy in that sort of accomplishment! When training for one of my marathons, I struggled with a hip flexor issue, which meant resting a little more and avoiding most hills during training. It wasn't what I was hoping for, but I was able to finish a hilly course with my fastest time. Listening to your body is ALWAYS important! So good luck to all and have fun!!!

9/7/2016 HC Vs Unity and ZW at Unity

Holland Christian vs Unity & Zeeland West

-> Results

It was Super HUMID and warm again for the first Conference meet of the season. A few drops of rain when we first arrived at Unity so I left my phone in the car. Sorry I didn't get very many pictures. :(

The Boys ran first at 4:15 and they all worked really hard despite the heat and the humidity. It was not a day for PR's but a day to tough it out and do your best. The Unity Course is challenging both physically and mentally because of the hill in the woods and the long out and back portion of the course.

The Girls ran at 5:15 and they really Powered through the Race. We are so proud of all of them. They tackled this course and did their best. They came through with the W against Unity and Zeeland West. We are so excited for the rest of the season. :)

I shared this on Facebook earlier in the Day yesterday for the students, but is a great reminder for all of us. (runners, coaches, parents)

First Conference meet of the season Today. Let's Make sure that we are building up the kingdom of God even in the Small things that we do do today. Our Sportsmanship and Attitude tells a lot about who we are.
"We are interdependently seeking to build God's Kingdom through athletics. We have the ability to put God on display in everything we do. This includes the small acts that go unnoticed in addition to those viewed by multitudes of people."- Dave Engbers
