Bengal Invite

Well that was FUN !!! Friday was a great day out in GR. Students got out of school early to Run at the Bengal Invitational at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids.  The park was beautiful, the fall colors on full display.

This was our 3rd race in 7 days so we were not super fresh and it was a little on the warmer side ... but it's Michigan and we are not going to complain about a nice warm fall day like we had. The team knew which teams/places they would need to beat to place well at this meet. So even though the times were slower, we did really well. The top 25 in each race went home with a neat finisher medal and teams that placed went home with a trophy.

Cougar Falcon Invite

On Saturday we had the pleasure of heading out to Calvin College/Gainey Sports Complex for the Cougar Falcon Invitational. This year it was Varsity Only so we took the top 7 girls and boys to run at this event. Upon arriving we were greeted by our very own team concierge who led us to our spot along the fence and went through the rules for the day. One thing that I would like to keep for the future, team assigned porto-potty, its kind of nice to not have a Super LONG line to wait in... haha... The VIBE was very different on the course this year. Normally this course is lined with people .. so many people that you can hardly get near the finish line to see them .. this year that was not an issue. The finish was WIDE open and as coaches we could run ALL over the place and not really run into any other people.

2019 Finish Line

2020 Finish Line

So how did the Race Go !!! I know that is what you really want to know :) . It went Really WELL coming off tired legs from Wednesdays meet in Spring Lake there was still a FIRE in these runners and we were so excited to see so many of them Run PR's on Saturday.

Congrats : Parker, Andrew, Sam, Austin, Benji (top 5) for all running a PR on Saturday.
Congrats:  Emma, Alaina, Laney, Alyssa for all running a PR on Saturday.

It wasn't the easiest day to go for a PR with very little crowd support and warmer temperatures at noon when we ran, but these Runners are showing us that they have come to put their best selves forward and work hard towards their season goals.

COMING UP:
This Coming Saturday we are looking forward to the Otsego Invite. Details are on the Live Calendar.
This will be a 2 Spectators per student event with Varsity and JV.

Don't forget to Check out Smugmug. These Pictures are WAY better then my I-phone Pictures :)

Jamboree #1

This year we are in the OK Blue so the Teams that we run against have changed a little bit and so have to locations of the meets. It was kind of funny we got to the park and we were like .. hey this looks familiar we have run here before... and in 2015 we ran at this part for the Spring Lake invitational when it had to be moved because the course conditions at Spring Lake were not suitable for a race. So then Blauw says to me "Hey Missy, this is where Sheila took that good picture of us ... and sure enough ... it was.

2015 -> 2020

It was a GREAT Day for Running :) I say that A LOT, I know ... but really everyday that we get to run and race is a great day.  The Boys team came in 2nd and the Girls team came in 4th.

I also managed to get a Picture EVERY SINGLE HCXC Runner, and you can find those in the 2020 shared Album. (The link is below)

Side Note: A few people have asked about snacks this year. YES I know we did not put a sign up out this year. That is because of Covid, we are not allowed to provide food for the athletes. They are supposed to take all their own food and drink with them each individually.

We Need to Address Something (A letter to your Fears)

So, several of you have stayed after and openly expressed some of your fears (especially racing). First, thank you for your openness and honesty because obviously you are not alone. BUT, we have to address it. This will make or break your performances. Here is what I know. There is Fear and there is fear. What I mean by that is - there is a fear of something where you are in awe of it. God! We should fear God and when we do, we do not need to fear the things of this world because we know He is bigger than them . THAT is an awesome fear. Fear of failing is paralyzing. We call it performance anxiety. It's fear. That is not a fear you want before a race or ever. So, why do we need to address this? What does it do and what can you do about it?

Why? Because events and races are won and lost before the start and finish because of the interrelationship between your mind, body and performance. In other words, what you think or say to yourself right before and during your meet, goes instantly and directly into your body and touches off some subtle, but important physiological change. These small changes will significantly affect how well you perform. Negative thoughts, negative outcome. Positive thoughts, positive outcome.
What happens in your body when you get nervous?
First, your muscles begin to tighten. That stinks.
Second, your breathing speeds up and gets shallower. Less oxygen.
Third, digestion shuts down leaving you feeling nauseous.
Fourth, your heart rate and blood pressure go up.

Can you relate?
What can you do about it?
Any time a negative thought comes, replace it! Stay relaxed, stay in the moment.
Focus on the moment in front of you...your pace and the next 400 or 800.
Run easy and free and TRUST your workouts and ability.
Need some positive self talk words? "I have trained as hard as the person passing me. I am strong. I could run all day. I have a strategy. I have am not afraid to leave it all out on the course."
Being nervous only means you care. Nervous is good; just make sure you channel it - don't let it turn to fear. Use it to motivate and not inhibit.
Bottom line: just Run and live for the pure joy of encouraging your team mates, using your God given talents, maybe passing people :). We have faith in you, now have faith in yourself to let the race unfold before you.

You are in our prayers.
Coach Deb, Dave & Melissa

A Little Add on from Coach Melissa:

Remember this is part of your training... You train to Run.. YES.. but you also are training for controlling those emotions at that starting line.

Things that can help boost your Mental Confidence:
Getting enough sleep, drinking water, eating well, and having a snack when you need it.
Participating at Practice, Warm Up, Workout, Cool down.
I was scrolling Instagram Stories last night :) and I follow lots of runners. This was the question that was asked of one of the running coaches.
"If you could give your past self advice on your training/race what would it be ? "
Don't be Afraid
Don't be Afraid to hurt
We don't train so it doesn't hurt on race day, we train so we can tolerate it and lean into it. To build up those mantras and practice using them. I'be spent a lot of time metal training to disassociate the feeling of a hard workout or race with pain. I tell myself it isn't pain, it is supposed to feel like that and it's a good Thing. Lean into the hurt and be grateful that you get to experience it.

Masks- Which ones have I liked so far

Disposable Masks- While they seem wasteful they are the easiest to breath through and lightest on your face.

Cotapaxi Teca Cotton Face Mask

https://www.cotopaxi.com/products/teca-cotton-face-mask?variant=31872323813437

The website says delayed shipping. I actually ordered mine from Zappos.com and it came in like 5 days, so that wasn't to bad. This mask is super light and very comfortable. I am a big fan.

Athleta

The Colors tend to be more on the girly side but there are a few darker colors that would be fine for men as well. These masks are great light weight mask with or without the nose bridge to help it stay in place.

I have Also heard that ...
Old Navy has some great masks.
Target has some pretty good masks.

Do you have a favorite ? so far .. let me know ..
Post your favorite brands or types of masks in the comments.

West Ottawa Bredeweg Invite

Invitationals have a very different feel this year, and we miss seeing all the family and friends the come to watch and support HCXC runners.

BUT ... we are SUPER ExCiTeD to be RUNNING.

You can find the results from Saturdays event here -> https://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/meet/169934/results

Saturday was a great day for running the temperature was fantastic and the team was ready RUN and see what they could do ... this meet resulted in some great times that we can use now for training as the season progresses. Our first meet was SOO hot that it was hard to calculate accurate training times from that. So we are excited to have a really good place to work from now.

*side note if you ever want to know more about these numbers and how we come up with them and use them. We are happy to share :) Also if you ever wondered what Coach Melissa does in her day Job .. THERE is a lot of Excel and these charts are super fun !!!

Lets get to a Few Pictures from Saturday

Why did we have White Ribbons on ?
If your runner did not fill you in ... I would LOVE to take a moment fill you in now. In 2016/2017 we sported white ribbons in honor of Mr. Witte a former HC teacher who tragically passed away in a car accident. Now lets jump to 2020 former HC Runners Andrew Vliestra '03 and Jillian Park '17 unexpectedly passed away along with many other really TOUGH times this year. So we brought back the white ribbons, to honor those that we lost.

Meets and Photos are going to look a little different this year,
but we will do our best to share with you.

Starting Lines look a little different this year and they are very Covid Compliant.
They also make for kind of cool pictures when the Runners are all in nice lines.

Coach Dave * haha he may not love all my picture taking

Happy Monday
