Regionals

Regionals this year took place at Redbud Motocross Park in Buchanan MI. The Course here is challenging with many hills and soft grass this is a Place Race, not a PR Race. The Girls and Boys Teams knew what they had to do and had a plan going into their races. They are tough and they knew that they were going to have to work hard on this course. They ran with HEART, as they turned corners and ran up difficult hills they stayed strong and positive their faces showed pure determination. We are so PROUD of all of them.

The Boys came in 9th in the Region and the Girls came in second. The second place finish for the Girls secured their spot at the State Meet!!!!! and we are super excited to be headed to STATE as a team again this year.

Conference Meet/Portage

Conference Meet Results

The Conference meet Wednesday took place at the South Christian sports complex off Kalamazoo Ave.  We got there and there was lightening spotted in the distance so right off the bat we had a 1/2 hour delay. With the threat of storms and rain the Girls races were all combined together, so all the schools ran at one time. The changing of times and the torrential down pour made things a little bit chaotic. It was an exciting meet with wind, rain, sun, and a rainbow. It was also exciting because the girls team is now undefeated in the conference. This next week is going to be very important as they prepare for the all conference meet on October 19 at Helder Park.

Portage Invite Results

The Portage Invite is always exciting, it is a great course for PR's and Varsity Times. The weather was great this year so it was very busy at the meet. If you were there, you noticed I am sure. It was also fun to have Leah O'conner there to sign autographs.

The Boys and Girls team had great races, there was a mix of PR's and Varsity Times as well as some disappointment at missed goals but that is how it goes sometimes. They always start very fast at Portage because there are so many runners and so much excitement, this can be good and bad for runners. If they start too fast sometimes it causes struggles later in the race, and we noticed some of this among the students. This is also really good for some runners because it pushes them to the next level and they realize they can push a little harder, this was also the case with some of the students. So the Portage Invite did not disappoint and was a great learning experience in Racing for ALL.

Running Through.. (Zach)

Zach Ailes
Holland Christian Cross Country '12
Hillsdale College

My freshman year of college I walked onto the cross country and track team. I had been unable to run the summer before, and when I began to train with the team I developed some knee pain. We got it checked out and after treating it for a month realized that my lower back and hip were out of alignment, and the additional strain on my knees was damaging them. Thankfully I realized it felt like an injury, and didn’t try to run through the pain. I spent the winter cross training—biking, aqua jogging, and doing therapy—to stay in shape until I was able to run. The spring track season rolled around and I was still barely able to run without pain. Finally, I was cleared to race at the end of the season. Needless to say after months of jogging in a pool, starring at the same walls, I was excited. I didn’t have time to build up much mileage before the last race, and after running for two weeks I entered the 5k. I’d done a few light workouts to help me get an idea of what my goal pace would feel like; I hoped to break my high school PR, and was banking on my hours in the pool to carry me through.
That night I lined up with my teammates for only the second time that year. I was both excited and nervous. I had no idea where I really was physically. The gun went off, and we took off from the line. After the first lap, of twelve and a half, I was right on pace, and it felt really fast. But the first half mile always feels fast. After the first mile I was scarred I couldn’t hold my pace, I began to second guess my self and worry I was going to die. After years of racing I had realized that the second mile seemed to always be the hardest. Once I got to the last mile, it was easy to mentally focus on “just one more”. One more half mile, and then just a kick to the finish. But that second mile, you start to get tired and there is a lot of race to go. I hoped that this race wouldn’t be any different, that I could hold my pace and keep hitting splits, and pull out the last mile. I had nothing to lose, so I held my pace each time for one more lap. And it sucked. But I hit my split each lap, until there was only four left. And then three laps, and I could start picking off one person, and then the next, and the next. With only a half mile left I could start to open up. The last three hundred meters I began to really push. You get to the point where you are running more with your arms than your legs, just to keep them moving. And then you cross the finish, and you know you left it all out there. It’s the best feeling when you know you not only ran efficiently—with a smart race strategy and good even splits—but also that you gave it your all. It’s so easy to sit and be safe, but I remember the races when I really went for it. When I tailed that guy who was always a little faster, or held that goal split. I’m glad I did that night: I tied my high school PR in my second race after 5 months of PT, cross training, and frustration.
I think we can always run one more lap. The last lap, while normally incredibly difficult if not painful, is always the last lap. Hang tough and give it all you have. Running is such a mental battle. I used to love hard courses with hills because, while it hurt, I knew I could always pass a couple people just by being mental tougher. If you can learn how to race against yourself when your tired and you want to ease up, you’ll not only be a mentally stronger person, but also a much more formidable competitor.

Powerful

"Kevin had a remarkable capacity to hold tension and hold his own opinion while making room for the opinions of others," Rev. Meg Jenista Kuykendall said. "He was so stinking good at loving people. He made life fun."
His absence was keenly felt, with many who spoke acknowledging that the question "why" was ringing in everyone's heads and hearts. This was particularly true during the Heidelberg Catechism, which contains the line, "that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven."
"If that phrase caught in your throat after the events of last week, you are not alone," Kuykendall said. "If you balled up your fist and gritted your teeth as you said it, so did I. I couldn't claim to be a Christian with any semblance of integrity without permission to grieve, to question and to doubt."
Feeling sorrow and anger is not an absence of faith, Kuykendall said. She read Psalms 13, one of many biblical passages expressing lament. It ends with the line, "But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing the Lord's praise, for he has been good to me.
"The psalm doesn't end with a polite lie, but an acknowledgement of pain," she said. "This is terrible, and God is good. The end for us is new, eternal life for Kevin. That is the hope we are holding onto, or rather, the hope that is holding onto us."

Just a Note/Cougar Falcon Invite/Otsego Invite

Happy Monday,

I hope that your week is off to a good start so far. Today is going to continue to be an emotional day for Students and Staff mourning for the Witte family.

Our Neighbor Lora has been helping Shari and the Family out a lot this past week and she shared these verses from the Family.

"We've been clinging to these verses" In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. Romans 8:26 Because of the Lord's great love, we are not consumed, for his compassion's never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

Continue to PRAY for the Family as they move forward.
